Generating PDFs in Flatplanner
After planning some pages in the Publication Planner and Flatplanner, you can generate PDF proofs of the planned pages to ensure that they look the way you want them to. Multiple pages can be proofed at once by generating a PDF from a publication or section, or PDFs can be generated one spread at a time.
You can also generate a PDF that only includes pages that have already been completed in InDesign and saved back to STEP (actual pages).
Generate a PDF from a Publication or Section
- In the Tree, navigate to the relevant publication or section, then right-click and select Generate PDF.
Or, from the Publication Planner, select and right-click the preferred row(s), then choose Generate PDF. Multiple rows can be selected by pressing the Ctrl or Shift key while making selections.
- In the Generate PDF dialog, select the preferred profile from the PDF Profile dropdown list. Since PDF profiles are system dependent, the PDF profile is set to 'Default' if no special PDF profiles have been configured for the system. For information on how to create and store custom PDF profiles in STEP, refer to the Setting up PDF Profiles (Presets) for the InDesign Server topic in the Publisher (Adobe InDesign Integration) documentation here.
- Check Make single PDF to include all documents in a single PDF file. If not selected, the resulting PDFs will be delivered as individual PDFs within a .ZIP file.
- Check Only actual pages to only generate PDFs of the actual pages saved back to the publication and to not generate PDFs from planned pages.
- Select the publication Version that you would like to generate PDFs from.
Note: Selecting 'All' for 'Version' does not automatically generate a layered PDF; all publication versions are embedded in a single layer within the PDF unless a special PDF profile has been configured. For information on how to create and store custom PDF profiles in STEP, refer to the Setting up PDF Profiles (Presets) for the InDesign Server topic in the Publisher (Adobe InDesign Integration) documentation here.
- Select the relevant Delivery Plugin. By default, this is' Default PDF Delivery plugin.'
- Click OK to start the Generate PDF background process. Click Go to process to go to the BG Processes tab, or, click Close to exit the dialog.
- The process occurs and the resulting file is delivered under the 'CreatePDFofPublication' node on the BG Processes tab. If Make Single PDF was selected, a PDF file is delivered. If Make Single PDF was not selected, a .ZIP file containing multiple PDFs is delivered.
- If both Make Single PDF and Only actual pages were left unchecked, the contents of the delivered .ZIP file should resemble the following, containing a mix of PDFs generated from planned pages and actual pages.
Generate a PDF from a Spread
- In the Tree, navigate to the desired publication, then open the Plan tab from a publication, section, or planned page.
Note: Regardless of the publication hierarchy level selected, a PDF can only be generated from the selected spread when using this method.
- On the Plan tab, right-click in the white area of the page, and then choose Generate PDF.
Note: Clicking on either the left-hand page or the right-hand page will generate a PDF of both pages in the spread.
- The Generate PDF dialog appears. In the PDF Profile list, select the preferred profile.
Note: PDF profiles are system dependent. Therefore, the PDF profile is set to Default if no special PDF profiles have been configured for the system. For more information on creating new PDF Profiles for your system, refer to the Setting up PDF Profiles (Presets) for the InDesign Server topic here.
- Check Only actual pages if you want the PDF to only include pages that have been completed in InDesign and saved back to STEP.
- Select the relevant Delivery Plugin. By default, this is 'Default PDF Delivery plugin.'
- Click OK. The PDF is instantly generated and does not require a BGP.
